A merchant is a business that takes payments from a cardholder in exchange for goods or services.

Every merchant is assigned a four-digit code known as the Merchant Category Code (MCC), see the table below for examples:

While the standard for an MCC is defined in ISO 18245, each acquirer can categorise them differently.
